Hotels in Vail
With steep, snow-covered peaks surrounding all corners, Vail, Colorado is one of the most popular ski resort towns in the United States. And for good reason—the Vail Ski Resort is the second largest single mountain ski resort in North America after Whistler, BC, and offers an impressive 193 ski runs and 33 lifts.
It goes without saying that the town of Vail is a mecca for hardy snowboard and ski bums, but it’s also booming in the summer when mountain biking, river rafting, horseback riding, hiking and golf are all available in abundance. Year-round, it also offers a wide range of spas, shops and restaurants to please even indoorsy folk. To meet the demand of the influx of visitors, a profusion of hotels and motels can be found.
ORIENTATION
Vail is located deep within the wilderness of the White River National Forest, but that doesn’t mean it’s hard to get to. Vail is located 100 mi (161 km) east of the state capital of Denver, and is close to other popular ski towns like Breckenridge and Aspen.
Vail is accessible via Interstate-70, but be careful—winter driving can be tough in the mountains. Regular bus service is also available from Denver.
VAIL VILLAGE
Considered the heart of town, Vail Village will have visitors convinced they've been transported to the Alps due to its Bavarian theme complete with a clock tower. There are plenty of accommodation options, most with a distinct European feel. Tivoli Lodge is one of the pioneer properties in Vail, opening a few years after the first ski season in 1963. Today, they offer elegant hotel accommodations all within one block of the chairlifts. Nearby, Hotel Gasthof Gramshammer provides comfortable hotel rooms and an on-site restaurant serving up many German favorites to complete the Bavarian experience.
A luxurious boutique hotel also located in Vail Village, Vail Mountain Lodge and Spa offers both hotel and condo-style rooms plus impressive on-site amenities such as a spa, yoga studio and gourmet bistro.
LIONSHEAD
Close to Vail Village is the elegant area known as the Lionshead. This newer part of Vail has also been developed to look like a European mountain village with a colorful building façade and charming winding streets. Lionshead is known for its vast array of shops and restaurants, not to mention the popular Vail Square Ice Rink around which all other buildings are centered.
The Lion Square Lodge is a large and elegant hotel offering a variety of styles of rooms plus an outdoor hot tub and pool that’s open year round. Best of all, it's situated at the base of the gondola and the ski resort. Nearby Lionshead Inn offers 85 comfortable rooms in an equally convenient location.
WEST VAIL
West Vail is another popular place to stay because although hotels here aren’t always within walking distance to the ski resort and town centre, they give visitors a chance to feel like they’re really getting away from it all. The Vail Cascade Resort and Spa is one of the grandest accommodation choices in West Vail, offering a number of lush hotel rooms and resort amenities. It even has its own chairlift connecting it to the rest of the ski resort.
ADDITIONAL ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS
Hotels are plentiful in Vail, but they’re certainly not the only choice for tourist; this popular resort town is also abundant in vacation condominium rentals, which are ideal for travelers who want to stay a while and enjoy the amazing natural scenery.
